This is the one thing the tool will not guess. Steel strings on a classical guitar can pull the bridge off; bronze acoustic strings on an electric are almost inaudible through the pickups.
Style sets the starting gauge and the wire. Benders want thinner; strummers and palm-muters want thicker.
Every step down takes tension out of the string. Down-tuned setups need a heavier set to stay tight enough to fret cleanly.
Measure nut to bridge saddle, or just pick your guitar's family. A short scale at the same gauge feels floppier than a long one — and on bass, the wrong scale set physically will not fit.
If you don't know, leave it on "just right" — the tool will not swing wildly off the default.
Guitar strings are described by two things: gauge, the diameter of the thinnest string in the set measured in thousandths of an inch, and material, the alloy the wound strings are wrapped in. A set called "10s" or "regular light" starts at a .010 high E. A set called "9s" starts at .009 and is easier to bend. Everything else — tone, tension, how hard you have to press, whether the guitar stays in tune — follows from those two choices plus the scale length of the instrument you are putting them on.

Tension rises with scale length. The same .010 set is noticeably tighter on a 25.5 in Fender scale than on a 24.75 in Gibson scale, which is exactly why Fender players often settle on 9s and Gibson players on 10s and end up with a similar feel. On a 24 in short-scale guitar, go a step heavier again. On a 27 in baritone, go a step lighter than the tuning alone would suggest, because the extra length is already doing the work.

Uncoated strings start to go dull after roughly 15 to 20 hours of playing, sooner if you sweat a lot or don't wipe them down. A gigging player might change weekly; someone practising a few hours a week might get two or three months. Coated strings typically last three to five times as long, which usually makes them cheaper per hour despite the higher sticker price. Wipe the strings down after every session — it is free and it roughly doubles their life.
On electric sets from .008 to .011 the G string is plain steel, which is what makes bending on the third string possible. On acoustic and classical sets the third is wound, and on heavy electric and flatwound jazz sets it is wound too. A wound third is warmer and harder to bend; that is a feature on an archtop and an obstacle on a Stratocaster.

For a 25.5 inch scale electric in standard tuning, .009-.042 is the common starting point; on a 24.75 inch scale, .010-.046 gives a similar feel. For a full-size steel-string acoustic, .012-.053 light gauge suits most players, with .011-.052 custom light if your hands are getting tired. Go heavier if you tune down, play hard, or want more volume; go lighter if you bend a lot or the strings feel stiff.
Usually yes. Dropping a half step rarely needs a change. A whole step down wants one gauge step heavier. Drop C wants roughly two steps heavier, or a light-top heavy-bottom set that keeps the treble strings bendable. Drop B and below generally wants three steps heavier or a purpose-made baritone set. Tension falls fast as pitch drops, and slack strings buzz against the frets and intonate badly.
No. Classical and other nylon-string guitars are built without a truss rod and with a much lighter bridge and top. Steel strings roughly double the pull and can bow the neck or lift the bridge off the soundboard. Nylon sets also come in two incompatible forms: tie-end for a classical tie-block bridge, and ball-end for an instrument with bridge pins. Check which bridge you have before ordering.
Both are acoustic-only alloys. Phosphor bronze is warmer and lasts longer before going dull, which makes it the default for most players. 80/20 bronze is brighter and more scooped when new but fades faster. Neither works on an electric guitar, because bronze is not magnetic enough to drive a pickup properly.
Bass sets are sold by scale, not just gauge: short (around 30 inch), medium (32 inch), long (34 inch) and super long (35 inch and up). Long scale is the most common. A short-scale set on a long-scale bass will not physically reach; a long-scale set on a short-scale bass leaves the thick silk winding sitting over the saddle, which kills sustain. Measure from the nut to the bridge saddle and buy to that number.

The trade-off is a slightly smoother feel and a marginally less bright attack. Wiping the strings down after every session is free and roughly doubles the life of either kind.
If you move one gauge step, usually not. If you jump two or more steps, or switch between nylon and steel, expect to need one. A bigger change alters the tension pulling on the neck, which changes relief, action and intonation, and a much heavier set can need the nut slots widened. Moving one step at a time avoids the bill.
